Do I need to pay for anything, ever?

No. There is no paid tier, no trial that expires, no feature held back, and no card ever asked for. Reading, uploading, the community and My Pocket are all free and all complete.

There is also no advertising anywhere in the app or on the site, which is the other half of the question people usually mean.
